We’ve heard this advice several times from several people – experts included. We have to keep ourselves hydrated and that the very least that we could do is drink 6-8 glasses of water daily. We lose fluids every day due to the different activities that we do so it is crucial that we replenish what was lost. Water is needed by our entire body, not just our skin cells, in order to perform its functions.

Eat Foods That Moisturize
What you chose to eat can hydrate you skin or leave you with dehydrated skin. In order to get the most of what you eat, make better choices in what you put in your body and go for foods that can boost the level of moisture. Eat more foods that are rich in omega-3, Vitamins A, C and E and foods that are loaded with antioxidants. Salmon and walnuts are perfect example of foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Do Not Exfoliate Too Often
It is important that we remove the dead skin or the top layer of the skin in order to reveal the fresh layer underneath. However, doing it too much can lead to your skin being susceptible to damage. And when the lipid barrier is compromised, it won’t be able to function properly, making your skin more sensitive and prone to premature aging.
But how often should you exfoliate? It depends on three things – the exfoliant you use, your skin condition and how thick your skin is. For example, if you have breakouts or clogged pores it is fine to use an exfoliating serum daily in order to control it. Take the time to read the instructions that came with your skincare product and do not exceed the recommended frequency.
Do Not Skimp On Your Moisturizer
Hydration shouldn’t just come from within. Your regular skincare routine should include the application of moisturizer. Your skin goes through a lot during the day and with its exposure to different factors like the weather, this could lead to dehydrated skin. Applying moisturizer is just one way of replenishing the lost moisture after a bath or after you cleanse. Not only that, it acts as protection from the sun and the act of applying the moisturizer can stimulate blood circulation which in turn could help boost the production of collagen.
Just like it is bad to over-exfoliate, it is also not good to over-cleanse. When it happens, you are stripping your skin of of its natural oils that’s supposed to keep it healthy. Once the skin’s natural barrier gets damaged, your skin care product could penetrate into the skin and irritate it. Over-cleansing can also cause your skin to produce more oils than necessary, triggering adult acne.
Pay attention to how your skin feels. If it feels tight after washing then you may be doing it too much cleansing or you may have been using a cleanser that is too strong for your skin type. Diuretics are food or beverages that promotes urine formation and your body ‘loses’ water and sodium in the process. Good examples of diuretics are alcohol and caffeine. For caffeinated drinks, it would take around 4 cups of coffee per day before you will notice its effects. Although you don’t have to give up that occasional shot of espresso, it would be good to be aware of what it can do to you and your skin. In extreme cases, if the body gets dehydrated then it would mean that the skin will not get enough moisture and as a result, you would get dehydrated skin.
You can do a simple test on to check if you might have dehydrated skin. Pinch your skin gently and observe what happens. If you skin bounces back then you are fine. If it doesn’t then you probably are dehydrated. What you can do is to go see your doctor so he can perform other tests and provide you with a professional advice.
