What causes blemishes? We all want healthy and blemish free skin. But unfortunately, it is possible for anyone with any skin type, to develop these unwanted skin blemishes. This is why it is so important to look after your skin. And so that you minimize your chances to develop skin blemishes. With that being said, it is important that we understand what causes skin blemishes and what we could do to prevent them. So what are skin blemishes?

What Causes Blemishes

So what causes blemishes? And what are they? A blemish is a kind of skin imperfection. It can be a pigmentation, acne, whiteheads, blackheads, redness, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and much more. There are several factors that come into play as to why people get these blemishes. One of the reason is the production of excess oil on your skin which could either be brought about by hormonal changes or a poor skin care regimen. If your body is producing too much oil, this can cause your pores to clog up creating an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply. Unfortunately, hormonal changes happen in different stages of our life. While this is not something we can really control, we can still do something with the lifestyle we live and the food we eat.

Now that we know what causes blemishes, now we need to know how to prevent blemishes. Although breakouts and blemishes can develop regardless of what your skin type is, there still are things that you can do to help prevent them.

Preventing Skin Blemishes

Have a skin care regimen in place and follow them religiously. Make sure that you wash, tone and moisturize your face in the morning and before you go to bed at night. Use products that are appropriate for your skin type. Just because your skin may be oily in some areas of your face, it does not mean that you have oily skin. Seek the help of a professional so you know what your skin type is and what kind of products you need to buy or what type of home remedies will work for you.

In general, exfoliating is great for your skin and can help with several skin conditions and help reduce skin oil if excessive. Try to exfoliate twice a week to remove the dead skin cells and most importantly remove the make up on your face before going to bed.

Refrain from frequently touching your face. By doing so, your face collects the dirt from your hands and quickly becomes one of the dirtier parts of your body. The added bacteria together with the existing acne bacteria could cause your skin problem to worsen. Be more conscious. Keep your hands busy so they don’t go to your face unnecessarily.

What Else Can You Do?

Take time to relax and de-stress. Stress could have a big impact on your skin condition, making it worse because stress signals your body to produce more cortisol. With high amount of cortisol, your body tends to produce excess oil. So, make sure that you have enough sleep and rest.

Eat healthy. Eat foods that are good for your skin, foods that promote the healthy production of collagen. So this means eat your vegetables, lots of them! And try to make all of your foods from whole foods and not packaged foods. If you have cystic breakouts you may want to look at the amount of your dairy intake. It doesn’t mean that you don’t eat dairy at all. You may want to control its intake. Stay away from foods that have high refined carbohydrates like white bread.
